The Candidates on NASA and Space Exploration

NASA's 50th Anniversary: Statement from Sen. Obama

"In recent years, Washington has failed to give NASA a robust, balanced and adequately funded mission. Though the good people of NASA who work day in and day out on new frontiers are doing amazing things, Americans are no longer inspired as they once were. That's a failure of leadership. "I believe we need to revitalize NASA's mission to maintain America's leadership, and recommit our nation to the space program, and as President I intend to do just that. We must revive the American ingenuity that led millions of children look to NASA astronauts and scientists as role models and enter the fields of math, engineering and science. Our leadership in the world depends on it."

Statement by John McCain on the 50th Anniversary of NASA

"While my opponent seems content to retreat from American exploration of space for a decade, I am not. As President, I will act to ensure our astronauts will continue to explore space, and not just by hitching a ride with someone else. I intend to make sure that the NASA Constellation program ha s the resources it needs so that we can begin a new era of human space exploration. A country that sent a man to the moon should expect no less."

This makes it much easier to choose who I'll vote for.

I don't know - Obama's statement doesn't actually say he'll support manned spaceflight, it just says that he'll support NASA. That's not the same thing. While I'm happy to see him supporting NASA in a general sense, his statement was vague enough to be nigh meaningless. I'm not seriously revising my opinion of him until I see a more detailed plan.

This is interesting. Has Obama finally realized that inspiring people is not NASA's job?

"Balanced" means that if NASA gets a budget increase it will be spread equally among the directorates, with nothing getting priority or short shrift. In other words: the same pie slices, just a slightly bigger pie.

Wow. It's just another speech. When he wakes up tomorrow morning, he'll be on the other side of the bed and another press release will come out.

He spent less than a year in Illinois govt. before deciding to run for the Senate. He spent less than 6 months in U.S. govt. before deciding he should be President. According to the media, he might as well be President already.

NASA is not a priority to the current President or his future successors. You'll all be safe in your jobs regardless of who wins this election. In the NASA Authorization Act of 2005, Congress showed its bi-partisan support for our goals. Their support was further shown with the submission of the NASA Authorization Act of 2009. I'm sure neither candidate would want to be the person to go against the wishes of Congress.

All of that being said, it's getting old to hear people worry about their jobs because a new President will be elected. NASA is NOT an employment agency. If your job contributes to our goals, then you will keep your job. If not, good riddance.

As a taxpaying citizen of these United States, I don't want to see my tax dollars go to a bunch of people who are more worried about keeping their jobs than achieving something great. I'm sure this won't be well-received, but it needs to be said.

I find it very difficult to have any admiration for Obama's supposed visionary or leadership qualities when his statements on NASA, and many other agencies and programs, basically boil down to, 'I'll take a look at them'. Why is it okay for a candidate to simply promise to be smart and wise at some time in the future? If he wants to say something about NASA, he should study it and then state what his vision for it is and what he plans to have it do. He ought to at least attempt to articulate some stance on the robotic/human debate, the far/near exploration question, the exact nature of NASA benefit to the country. Instead he says, 'I like NASA and I'll take a look at what it should do when I get around to it.' Not good enough for me. I have an opinion on these issues, why shouldn't he?

At least McCain has indicated support for specific NASA projects and plans, and not just the agency and its people in general. I wish he gave more details on what his direction to the agency will be, but Obama's vagueness sounds to me like pure hogwash. Unless he explains how and why he will support continuing specific programs, I assume that some of them will be axed, especially Constellation.
