"Space Adventures, the only company that provides human space missions to the world marketplace, announced today that Charles Simonyi, Ph.D., intends to train with the Soyuz TMA-14 crew in preparation for a spring mission to the International Space Station (ISS)."Having a repeat orbital client demonstrates to the world that participating in a space mission is truly a magnificent and awe-inspiring experience. It is also an excellent example that the marketplace is even larger than previously anticipated because of the potential occurrence of clients who fly on multiple occasions," said Eric Anderson, president and CEO of Space Adventures. "We congratulate Charles on his continued commitment to commercial spaceflight. We look forward to assisting him in preparation for the spring 2009 mission."
I for one am not going to tinge my comments with what could be construed as envy -- because I believe an individual's money - be they middle-class or wealthy - is theirs and THEIRS ALONE to do with as they please. Nonetheless, I'd happily "let" Mr Simonyi have his second mission and respect him more if he then went on to sponsor a young student to travel to I.S.S. on one of the last Spaceflight Participant "Tourist" missions. Or me... :) I'd devote my life to being a 'Space Ambassador'!!
And God knows, we're going to need them in the years to come, whrther or not the likes of me would be best for the job...
Good for him. He earned it, he can spend it however he wants to. Ray, there is no "class warfare" until people like you call for it, which is exactly what you're doing.
Confirming my beliefs that the two most addictive things in this life are (1)extreme acceleration, and (2)microgravity.
Ray, if I won the Powerball or Mega-Millions for $200 million, I'd go until the money ran out.
Far better than watching Wall Street throw it down the rathole!

I realize how people who are this wealthy love to propagandize their joyides into space as somehow altruistic and they are "inspiring the next generation." But at some point this type of behavior by the uber-rich becomes elitist, at worst, and at best it would be "someone with so much freaking money but nothing truly worthy to spend it on."
Perhaps Senator Obama should re-focus his "windfall tax" on people who can afford to fly to the ISS more than once? While some people in this country are losing the only house they have, and others are having their hopes for retirement wiped out, Joyboy Simonyi decides he needs to "inspire" some more and preach from the pulpit of the ISS. Who says there is no class warfare?
