Chinese Astronaut Completes EVA

Chinese Astronaut Makes Nation's First Spacewalk, NY Times

"A Chinese astronaut orbiting the earth slipped out of the Shenzhou VII spacecraft Saturday afternoon and performed the nation's first spacewalk, establishing another milestone in China's space program. Zhai Zhigang, a 41-year-old astronaut, pulled himself out of the orbiting module at 4:40 p.m. Beijing time, latched himself to a handrail, and then waved to a national audience during a live broadcast of the country's third manned space mission."

Looks like a hybrid between the Orlan and the U.S. suit.

Industrial espionage at it's finest.

No an ITAR (and feather!) free Sino-Russian Technology Transfer.
But the Feitian suit could hardly be described as a cheap 'knock off' of the Orlan @ 4.4 MegaBucks each!
Mythological Factoid: Feitian is named after a Buddhist Goddess - one of the Flying Apsaras.

Oh, for Petesake! Form follows function. You are still dealing with the requirements to keep a Mark I, Mod 0, homo sapiens sapiens sino extraterrestrailist (taikolnaut) alive in space. I get tired of people attributing virtually every accomplishment by a country other than the U.S. in science and technology to having stolen our ideas (or someone else's). Besides, if nobody borrowed from other's developments and ideas, we'd really still be reinventing the wheel and discovering fire!

Give the Chinese credit for beginning the development of a viable manned space program. Yes, they may have started 50 years after the U.S. and the Russians, but they are catching up, while we are arguing about how to progress beyond LEO...or maybe beyond the ground at KSC!

I wish the crew of Sz 7, a successful mission and a safe return home!

Ad LEO! Ad Luna! Ad Ares! Ad Astra!

Hmm, very short tether. I agree with Mick LOL.

Hmmm...is that package at the lower end of the suit the equivalent of a SAFER?

Hey matey, ever heard of the V2?

Guess not.

Close and repeated viewing of the video clearly show that the suit is a modified Orlan. The control panel, and associated switches on the HUT are the same as the current ISS Orlan. Both safety tethers are identical right down to the red/white color used onboard ISS. The backpack is identical in size and shape to the Orlan (and to answer a previous question, the large fixture at the bottom is not a SAFER, it is a battery pack for suit power). There are also numerous other clues which clearly show, to those of us familiar with the ISS Orlan, the Orlan heritage of this suit.

What is interesting to note is that the helmet does not have the standard "moon roof" as the Orlan. In fact you can see the 'moon roof" on the helmet other EVA crewmember when he appears out of the hatch. Also note that the crewmember is on umbilical for the entire EVA. The suit also appears white, as compared to the standard Orlan-tan, but that could be camera wash-out.

Also note that the crewmember has a difficult time maintaining body position and at one point goes perpendicular to the spacecraft. While it can be deemed mission success, the Chinese (and the Russians) both have a long way to go before they can equal a U.S. Hubble or ISS EVA.

The questions that have not been answered, nor do I expect them to be, all relate to the level of co-operation between Russian EVA specialist and the Chinese program. Was the suit manufactured by Zvezda corp for China, or was it licensed and build in China? How much Chinese technology was incorporated into the suit? The heart of any spacesuit is the ECLSS - is it Russian or Chinese? Knowing that would tell you how far along they are using Chinese technology or how much they are depending on Russian.
Technology.

It would be stupid NOT to take whatever you can use from what's been done before.
Not all cultures have the "reinvent the wheel" and "not invented here" attitudes that we have. And not all cultures see private ownership of ideas as being a logical or sensible thing.

Dude, that is only good news, another procurement source for NASA, should relations with Russia go really sour :)
