Somewhere between 40 and 50 people were laid off, not hundreds.
Well, at least they get a warning, in the 'real world' when you get laid off you do not know about it until it happens. But to all those who might loose their job, their will be others and every body I know that has gotten laid off has ended up better off later (including me).
NASA is not suppose to be a works program. The shuttle is a money pit and should not be extended past 2010. Maybe it is time for some of these employees to start their own companies and then hire others to expand the available number of jobs.
I'm not saying that they need to start space companies, but to look at their own skills and start companies related to their abilities. Examples:
Welders, start companies that do welds on heavy equipment.
Engineers, start free lance companies that do reviews of products being produced by other companies. Or they work on developing their own marketable products.
Management, developes companies that review other companies workforces and help them to streamline their work force. They work to develop cost saving plans for other companies.
For every person that starts his/her own business, they could be building companies that create many jobs for others.
They were NOT laid off but were notified that they will be laid off if workload completes per schedule. If people get scared, and additional tanks are ordered - the layoff notices will be rescinded.
Yes, NASA is not supposed to be a works program. For those of you not aware, there were RIF's ( Reduction in Force ) and RIG's ( reduction in Grade )in civil Service following Apollo. Contractors were not the only affected ones. Even the imperial JSC wasn't immune. I might add that NASA is not supposed to be a Spoils program which BUSH and Griffin seems to have made it ( with some help from others I am sure).
I think that what you may find is that when any employer lays off a metric truckload of people that there are certian procedures which must be followed - including prior notification.

Before all those people get "doorknobbed", let's hope this Congress or the next decide to extend the Shuttle program. If they delay very long, we might not be ABLE to build more tanks if we want and can afford to!
And then there's the problems with Hubble...
