Editor's note: This morning, at 7:30 am, before the STS-126 FRR began, a small ceremony was held whereby Virginia Whitehead received NASA's Lifetime Achievement Award from Mike Griffin. A special 10 minute video was played highlighting her career. Well done!
An Award for Virginia Whitehead
Congratulations, Mom! (Virginia's undergraduate research was into variable stars--a large group later discovered to include Pulsars, Black Holes, and Double or Triple star clusters such as that of our neighbor, Alpha Centauri! And now we get such great images of many of these with the Space Telescope! She and a fellow astronomer always said they would not be a 'theoretical physicicist'--they'd stick strickly to measuring all the stuff, not theorizing about it & the space telescope lets you do some of that)
Way to go Virginia! One of the true superstars of the space program, and literally a legend in her own time. One of KSC's most admired people. I have a quote over my desk from her: "If I did it, there's a rule against it now."
Was a pleasure working with you on the GAS/SEM Shuttle Small Payload program. Congratulations.
Was a pleasure working with you on the Shuttle Small Payloads program. Congratulations.
This award certainly could not have gone to a more deserving person in the Space Program. Virginia I will miss your "can do attitude". I remember from the HST deploy mission all I ever saw from you were the backs of your tennis shoes. You certainly were a force to be reckoned with and an inspiration to everyone. From the time I worked with you at the beginning of HST's life to this last Servicing Mission you have been a "go to " person. You are truly a legend. Thanks for a great run......
Congratulations virginia,
it was a pleasure to work with you on STS-99 (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) in 1999 - 2000. "we mapped the earth in 11 days". I will never forget the "special" sightseeing tours at KSC with you. greetings from germany
