Message from the President on NASA's Day of Remembrance, Jan. 29, 2009

"The arrival of a new year reminds us that life is a journey, one that takes us on many unexpected paths. NASA's role is to pioneer journeys into the unknown for the benefit of humanity. Along the way, we sometimes experience tragedy instead of triumph.

Today, we pause to reflect on those moments in exploration when things did not go as expected and we lost brave pioneers. But what sets us apart as Americans is our willingness to get up again and push the frontiers even further with an even stronger commitment and sense of purpose.

On this Day of Remembrance, we remember the sacrifices of those who dared to dream and gave everything for the cause of exploration. We honor them with our ongoing commitment to excellence and an unwavering determination to continue the journey on the path to the future.

President Barack Obama"

Thank You Mr President

It's a very nice gesture from the White House, but I have my serious doubts he actually pen'd this....

Editor's note: Who knows. The same thing can be said for George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush ... but they all affiliated themselves with remarks written by others as being indicative of their own. The intent is of equal importance. Imagine if the President actually wrote EVERYTHING that his name is affixed to ....

Why does this half picture of obamas face continue appear on this website? Surely we can muster up a full face shot Keith. Is it a takeoff on the Carpenter book picture? It was nice to hear that he cares about the Space journeymen who gave their all.

Editor's note: So that the NASA lapel pin can be seen. Gosh, don't you have bigger things to complain about? Of course if I put a full smiling Obama up then all the Obama haters will start to complain.

I kinda like the picture.

I think this is a nice gesture. It doesn't really matter if he did all the wording himself. He is very busy, you know. The point his he's bothering to take an interest in NASA.

It says "hey, the economy has exploded, we've got two wars and everyone expects me to bring peace to the middle east. But I haven't forgotten about you NASA guys."

And I'm sure he knows some people will get that impression when he signs off on it.

Fun thought regarding who wrote it. If he made a negative statement, nobody would question who wrote literally wrote it. It doesn't matter; his writers can be thought of as one of his communication tools.

Words are nice and comforting but it's money that really talks. The ex-administrator attempted to position the Constellation program as our space infrastructure. Obviously this view isn't shared by the current administration as there isn't anything included in the economic stimulus bill approved yesterday by the House of Representatives which was supposed to be used for infrastructure that is ready to build.

Wasn't it Peggy Noonan that wrote the eulogy Ronald Reagan gave after the Challenger accident?

patience....the senate still may add the funding

I think it's unrealistic to think that any of our senior leaders pen these messages. They simply don't have time. That's what staffers are for. Staffers draft and the leader can tweak. I was very pleased by the tone of the message. We need to just wait and see what will happen, knowing that we won't get clarity til late spring or so.

Talk is cheap. Those seventeen individuals laid down everything they had on the altar of the human exploration of space. Politicians on both sides of the asile should honor that commitment with a consistant year to year financial support expanding America's frontiers in space.

Another President once said it better: "It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain..."

We shall see what kind of steward the new leadership for that shared vision.
