$18.7 Billion For NASA in FY 2010

NASA Statement About Budget Overview for FIscal Year 2010

"Acting NASA Administrator Christopher J. Scolese said the following in response to the 2010 fiscal year budget overview for NASA released Feb. 26: "The $18.7 billion budget proposal for 2010 is fiscally responsible and reflects the administration's desire for a robust and innovative agency aligned with the president's goals of advancing our nation's scientific, educational, economic and security interests. "This budget ensures NASA maintains its global leadership in Earth and space research, and it advances global climate change studies, funds a robust program of human and robotic space exploration, allows us to realize the full potential of the International Space Station, advances development of new space transportation systems, and renews our commitment to aeronautics."

NASA FY 2010 Budget Details

"The President's Fiscal Year 2010 Budget provides $18.7 billion for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) which, when combined with the $1 billion provided for NASA in the Recovery Act, is more than $2.4 billion above the 2008 level. The Budget funds a program of space-based research to advance our understanding of climate change and its effects, as well as human and robotic space exploration. It also supports the use of the Space Shuttle to complete assembly of the International Space Station."

May not keep pace with inflation

I thought I'd read somewhere that Ares-1X is a different project from Ares-1 work?

Are they seperate budget items? How much has actually been spent on which?

Also, does anybody know what the differences are between Ares-1X & Ares-1 (besides the Orion mockup)?

What's the criteria for 1X "success"?

How much of 1X success proves viability of Ares-1? Like, if Ares-1X works, then Ares-1 viability is thus proven to what degree of certainty?

It is time to shut NASA down with the exception of maybe
some weather sat. Use the money to feed the hungry and
educate the poor on the planet. NASA is truely a waste of
money.

Editor's note: Gee I wonder why so many third world countries are trying to do what NASA does ...

MoonLady asked: Also, does anybody know what the differences are between Ares-1X & Ares-1 (besides the Orion mockup)?

From the web:

"The Ares I–X flight will consist of a functional booster stage and an upper stage mass simulator, which has the same mass as the actual upper stage."

From the web:
"The test flight objectives are focused on first-stage flight dynamics, controllability, and separation of the first and upper stages..... By flying the vehicle through the first stage, the test flight will also verify the performance and dynamics of the shuttle’s solid rocket booster in “single stick” arrangement."

Note for David Brown:

What the heck, let's kill America's one of America's last domains of technological superiority. We no longer have the world's largest airliner, tallest building or longest bridge or longest tunnel. Let's be known as the nation of Walmarts, medical malpractice lawyers and mortgage bankers. In time, you can take that well-fed, well-educated person outside some night and point out the Chinese or Indian space craft passing overhead.

I'm still wondering how the Administration plans to close that 5 year (minimum) gap? I was hoping for an extension of the Space Shuttle Program for at least a couple more years. Hoping to keep my job for a couple more years . . .

Its really disappointing the new Admin is going along with the Bush Admin's politically expedient and shortsighted way to replace the shuttle. No close the access gap. Keep going with the same stupid launcher programs for Orion. If there's one country you don't want to put your access to the space station in the hands of, its Russia - as they have shown with Europe, they're willing to use whatever lever they have and we're handing them a big one. Hopefully space science got a boost at least.

Well, I guess that's over (my hopes with the admin), backwards (splashing down capsules, keeping the 2010 shuttle shutdown deadline and no space access) to the future!

if these future projections, as listed by Michael above, actually pan out then we are in deep, deep trouble. These definitely do NOT even keep pace with inflation. What will be cut to accommodate these flat (pre-inflation) budgets? Even though the past 8 yeasr left a lot to be desired, this sort of thing hasn't happened since the Clinton years...

2013 18.6
2014 18.9
