Another Administrator Candidate Says No Thanks

Lyles takes name out of running for NASA's top job, Dayton Daily News

"Retired Air Force Gen. Lester L. Lyles said Wednesday, April 29, that the White House indicated he was the top candidate to become the next NASA administrator, but that he has taken his name out of consideration."

Editor's note: Since the White House seems incapable of actually finding a nominee perhaps it's time the public submitted a lit of top 5 candidates that are worthy and have not already said no or otherwise been politically torpedoed.

What is the hurry ?

JSC, KSC not MSFC is worried about funding there Centers with a never ending flow of funding forever.

what damage is it causing, NONE, just people crying about look at me look at me, I need attention, I need to be petted as a good dog, woof woof.

what the hell, the stimulus passed NASA got funding, The FY09 Budget is in progress NASA got more funding then asked for. The people working on CxP should be concerned as they have been playing with themselfs for the past 5 years. Now they cannot ripoff the agency like they used to. To fricking bad, the balance of the NON-CxP workforce could care less from the parasitic program.

it NASA's future for the next 50year, ohhhh nooo the marketing approach is not working... Now what should we do,,, get a new adminstrator to help me Mr wizard help me, transport me to another time and place, please mr wizard please.

So if the public submits names and Stephen Colbert wins.... what do we do this time?

Lyles really impressed me, but this doesn't totally surprise me.

With that being the case, and since Mr. Editor asked, I submit Dr. Lennard Fisk should be at the top.

“They appealed to my patriotism. But, I reminded them that I’ve already given 35 years to the United States Air Force,”

Wonderful... they asked he said no so it sounds like a little "begging" went along.

Sad.

Too bad, but it really is going to take somebody that really wants to dig in & clean up the place.

Only concern with Lori Garver is her hubby's link to Lockmart.

But disappointed that there hasn't been a nominee with a "WOW factor".

I liked the Gration pick, but haven't heard of anybody since then with a Right Stuff WOW.

Chris Scolese. By all accounts, he's done a very good job so far. Anyone here ever worked with him, actually know him? NASA folks, any scuttlebutt?

I'll put myself in for NASA administrator. First thing I'd do is clean house at the top and get some fresh blood in. Time to reevaluate the Ares series and look for something better (Direct). I see nothing today in the Ares program that will be "heritage". Seems to be mostly new hardware/pads/facility mods.

I would also want to know why it takes a committee to make a decision on making a decision. I known Von Braun is putting out more kinetic energy right now (spinning in his grave) than Ares I would. Some decisions need to be made without a committee. I find it hard to believe that it should take longer to get us to the moon this time than it did from '63-'69. Back then, everything was new. We were taking baby steps. Now, we're walking (albeit slowly). Time to make the hard decisions, boys. That's what you get paid for.

It makes you wonder, what do all these people turning the job down know, that we don't?............yet

Here are some folks I've liked and would like you all to consider. Perhaps we can get them all into the top NASA positions to share the effort of really getting us going again.

Alan Stern,

Pete Worden,

Harrison Schmitt,

John Young,

Ray Bradbury (to get us thinking outside the box and beltway).

Colbert might be a good choice.

I agree with William Morris. Since no one else wants the job, I say give one of us bloggers a chance to run the agency. We have all the answers. Just ask us. We can each draw straws. The winner gets to make all the decisions within a budget limit set by the President and Congress. I'll throw my name in. If I get the job, I'll get my teflon suit out and stop reading NASA WATCH so I can "Be Like Mike". I can't guarantee you won't complain about my performance. I can guarantee I'll be pretty good at ignoring the complaints. I would be nonpartisan as evidenced by my heavy disdain for both political parties. I know what I want NASA to do. Give me a chance.

Barack, give me a call.

Remember the Unknown Comic? Lets hire someone with a Masters in Aeronautics, put a brown paper bag over his head and call him NASA Administrator. Any willing candidates?

If "Obama" is not eligible Constitutionally to be President due to questions concerning his actual birthplace, all that he has signed becomes illegal and invalid.

So far there have been aproximately 40 lawsuits trying to get "Obama" to show a certified copy of his actual vault copy birth certificate.

It is estimated on the Web that "Obama" has spent about one million dollars on lawyers to keep from showing his birth certificate.

Some people believe that "Obama" was born in Kenya.

Others believe that he is actually a citizen of Indonesia.

The United States Constitution requires that our President be a natural born citizen of the United States. This is to lessen the chance of loyalties to foreign countries.

Hey, I'm just the messenger . . .

Hey, I'm just the messenger . . .

so by all means, keep repeating your message, it only further reduces your credibility among people who think we have far more serious problems than where on the planet earth someone was born. Those are people who are doing and not just saying.

Harrison Schmitt

The vocal global warming denier? That's a non starter.

I nominate Steven Colbert. At least he's shown interest (and persistence) in space affairs. I wouldn't mind renaming the launchers Colbert I and Colbert V if that's what it takes for them to be developed (and work, of course) on the existing budget.

One word:
Colbert

Chris Scolese is talented, organized, dedicated, and motivates people. I vote for Scolese as administrator with Colbert as associate administrator, instead of Lori Garver.

user-pic

I have to submit without further review after the last Congression NASA Hearing.

Dr. Lennard Fisk appears to have the respect of Congress and the President as well as the National Acadmey and has a long history with the storied agency.

If it does not work out, Dr Worden or Stern if they will take the job.

Maybe what is becoming apparent is that Mike G is a tough act to follow. So tough that...

re: Alan Stern as admin candidate

Dr. Stern has stated publicly he isn't interested in the job @ spacepolitics.com and wants to spend more time with his children (an admirable goal wouldn't you say? - probably due to the many hours on airplanes he spent getting New Horizons going).

I was a strong advocate for his candidacy but left it alone when I learned the above, however it is interesting.... that his name still pops up.His wikipedia page has changed a lot over the last 3 months and is quite an interesting read....

I like and respect Lori Garver, I think she has moxi, and is a the kind of person that can build consensus going forward, you could describe her as the opposite of Dr. Mike Griffin (please no anti-mike rants though ok?). She is knowledgeable, passionate and a pleasant woman.

She has influence in this White house even if she is not on site as the transition is complete, and I hope if there is a New national aerospace council that she is on it and that she gets Dr. Stern to chair it assuming that the time commitment would be a lot less than being an administrator

The lack of a Head for Nasa is getting more attention. Here is a New York Times article from today.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/04/science/space/04nasa.html?ref=global-home

--It starts--
More than 100 days into his presidency, Barack Obama has yet to name the person he wants to lead the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In this delay Mr. Obama has company: President George W. Bush did not decide on his choice, Sean O’Keefe, until November of his first year in office.

But NASA is on the cusp of a once-in-a-generation transition, winding down space shuttle flights and construction of the International Space Station before ramping up ambitions for a return to the moon and an eventual trip to Mars.
