Paul Haney

Haney, 'voice of NASA' reporter, dies of cancer, AP

"Paul Haney, who was known as the "voice of NASA's Mission Control" for his live televised reports during the early years of the space program, has died of cancer. He was 80. Haney died Thursday at a nursing home. Kent House, owner of the Alamogordo Funeral Home, confirmed that Haney died of complications from melanoma cancer, which spread to his brain and was untreatable. Haney became NASA's information officer in 1958, three months after the space agency was formed and went on to manage information from the Gemini and Apollo flight programs. He pioneered a real-time system of reporting events as they happened in the first manned flight program, Project Mercury."

Very sorry to hear that Paul died. I had heard him many, many times and never knew his name.

My father died of cancer so I know what he went through and how his family feels now.

Our prayers and thoughts to him and his family at this time of great need.

I'm sure he will missed by his co-workers, friends and family.

I know I'll miss his distinctive voice.

God speed, Paul Haney.

Rest in Peace Mr Haney, my deepest sympathies to the Haney Family

Deepest sympathies to his family, and deepest respect for his pioneering legacy. We speak often enough about engaging the public with space exploration; Paul Haney was instrumental in launching the very idea.

Memories of my good friend Paul Haney will remain with me. His sense of humor and modest demeanor despite his many accomplishments throughout his life and the true friendship shown by Paul and his wife Jan to all of their many friends over the years.

Despite his many obligations he helped me coach a youth football team and the 12 and 13 year old boys loved him even though they didn't know who he was and what he had done. His plaque by his front door reading "Beware, Mad Cat" and his pet pig Petunia which he walked on a leash on the beach in Galveston Texas. His resignaion letter to the publisher of the St. Petersburg (Florida) Times where he noted that his reason for leaving was that "there just seems that there is something better to do than sitting around listening to arteries harden and watching paint dry".

We will miss him.

Enjoy your rest, dear friend.
