Invitation-only Aeronautics Update

Keith's note: On 27 August there will be an invitation-only media briefing with Jaiwon Shin, NASA's Associate Administrator for Aeronautics who will give a progress report on activities undertaken in the past year and discuss what's ahead for the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate in fiscal 2010. Alas, you can only attend this event if you are invited and are physically present in Washington, DC. I have been invited but I will be on a train when this briefing occurs. Alas, there is no provision for a phone bridge (even though all the other directorates regularly use them). But they do have money to spend on refreshments.

Given that the actual aeronautics research being discussed is not done at NASA HQ but at various NASA field centers and in the private sector spread out across the U.S., one would think that such an update would be of considerable interest to media who are not physically present in Washington, DC. Given the looming changes that will come from the Augustine Committee and shuttle retirement, people are especially anxious as to understanding what the agency will be doing.

Again, as I have observed before, people in the aeronautics world regularly complain that there is not enough news coming out about aeronautics. This is why.

It is a media briefing

DR Shin has already discussed the 2010 plan with members of ARMD which you are not.

This was done at the field centers in the spring. The stimulus funds were discussed as well.

Editor's note: you miss my point. NASA Aeronautics PAO is limiting access by the *MEDIA* who can ask questions of the AA. I got the MEDIA* invitation - you did not since you are not *MEDIA*, right?.

Typical

ARMD made this decision
DR Shin may not be the best public speaker.

No I am not the *MEDIA*

I did suggest DR Shin to talk with the new FAA adminstrator however in the spring, He stated he would do so and let us know if he did, could be by way of the *Media*

Also discussed was the CONUS operations for suborbital point to point and parabolics flights along with Nexgen activities. which may not be discussed with the *media"

How much can there be to talk about.

The aero program is a shell of what it once was as facilities erode or close, staff expertise continues to decline from what was once a position of excellence, and research dollars are nearly nonexistent.

No doubt he will speak of great plans and future accomplishments as the aero person does every so often.

How are they expecting us to do flight research with just CFD, a couple of wind tunnels, and some aircraft older then the junior engineers working on them?

Maybe he can indeed address better coordination with the FAA on NextGen matters, since the NASA IG just busted ARMD for reducing aero research capabilities (budget driven, as usual) that JPDO and the NRC had identified as critical for achieving NextGen goals.

By mothballing the research 757 without doing a cost-benefit analysis, they proved that the budget truly is the bottom line, despite assurances to the contrary that safety and other concerns are primary. Just another casualty of trying to do ISS/Shuttle/VSE/Ares at the expense of everything else at NASA with no budget increases to pay for any of it.

Hopefully he can also address a plan to restore the 757 to active duty, including the additional budget resources, now that they have been called out....
