Why Bother Telling People About Cool Stuff, eh?

Apollo 11: Second look, LRO

"A month after LROC's first image of the Apollo 11 landing site was acquired, LRO passed over again providing LROC a new view of the historic site. This time the Sun was 28 degrees higher in the sky, making for smaller shadows and bringing out subtle brightness differences on the surface. The look and feel of the site has changed dramatically."

Keith's note: A press release? No. mention on NASA.gov? No. A Twitter post? No. Why bother, eh?

The first footprints on another world.

You are very right.
This should be one of the lead stories on the evening news.

But it's not.

Ever since the new Apollo 11 LROC picture came online yesterday, I've been inundated with blog reports about it by the usual suspects (though this time I may have been among the first to report it). Since NASA had its BIG moment in the Sun with the earlier Apollo 11 picture two months ago, there was probably just no need felt to hoot again. There are so many cool images on the LROC blog already (including an extremely slanted view) that one should just check it daily anyway ...

How long will this sitting on data continue ?!? MESSENGER flied by Mercury yesterday and it entered safe mode. But as soon as the images were received, they were released.

It's a shame that the LROC team continues sitting on interesting images. A SHAME!

God, an image of Surveyor 1 was released (lroc.sese.asu.edu):

Just look at the date the image was taken: Fri Jul 17 04:25:28 UTC 2009

Now it's obvious that the LRO team was sitting on the image for more than two months!

SHAME!

Good points by all.

I still can't tell from the enlarged image if the American flag is still standing (took a beating during liftoff). If it was, it should cast a small shadow as well. But if it's on the ground, the Stars & Stripes should be visible as a small rectangle. Any speculations?

awesome. no other words. i just wish we could go back before i get too old to remember.

Hey nice work, you got nasa.gov to update this morning and add this story...I think somebody is watching you...I'm not sure if it's flattering or creepy to know the federal government watches and responds to your actions...

And as for the images...very nice...but lets land on this rock already...Unless we want a communist rock orbiting our planet...jk
