I think it's very difficult for space zealots and enthusiasts to recognize how unimportant the space program is to most people, even those living near large NASA centers. No matter how hard NASA tries, it will never be able to connect. Let's face it, it's an artifact of the Cold War, and now must be restored to its former NACA-like R&T role.
Sort of like
Our Goal: $3B/year by FY11"
metamorphosing into
Our Goal: $3B"
It's the law of reduced expectations. Actually, the lesson here for SaveSpace is that when you overcommit, it comes back to bite you. The only thing that was proved here is that they can't find half a million people to write letters.
Unfortunately many of the local political leaders have campaigned long and hard on a platform of cutting taxes regardless of the consequences. Now here they are saying taxpayers in other parts of the country should be paying more taxes to send money here. They can't point out any practical benefits from all the money to be spent on Constellation, so they're reduced to complaining that they want jobs and making nebulous claims like "national security". It is not very persuasive.

Keith's note: Compare the
Its called an "adjusted expectations" moment.
LOL!
Brevard County SHOULD have started this when the Augustine Commitee was announced or when Obama
came to Titusville.
As usual, they're late to the party. (:
But at least they're doing SOMETHING (finally).
