What a perfect opportunity for some spacers to have the ear of the First Family and talk up exploration! Let's hope somebody from NASA gets invited...

Yeah, those are actions that really do count for lots more than the words.

Now, somebody remind Obama about his promises to the KSC Shuttle workforce - already broken with the layoffs since he took office for which he already owes Florida an explanation.

Would he be paying attention or does his staff of advisors screen out that stuff or does the NASA DC crowd take it upon themselves to execute layoffs in contradiction of Obama's specific promises to the Florida Shuttle workforce?

When the words & the deeds don't match.......

So far it's a big disappointment there. Obama doesn't seem to be well served by somebody -advisors, staff, NASA DC, or somebody....

Moonlady-I am not aware of any promises made by either Presidential candidate last year that there would be NO layoffs at KSC or any other NASA center heavily invested in the Space Shuttle's operations. There is simply no way to transit from the labor-intensive orbiter processing to a simpler capsule-and-booster system without losing people-that's the unfortunate truth. What people hope for-and what the candidates promised-was to minimize these layoofs and spend time and money in retraining opportunities. I know USA and Boeing have made major efforts in this regard. People and skills will be lost, especially if the follow-on vehicles are delayed or shifted to primarily commercial suppliers. With no Altair to assemble at KSC, these folks will not be able to hang on for two or three years and ironically may well be hired back after being laid off initially.
At lease, let's hope so!
