"If you gave me an infinite pot of money, I could not get a human to Mars in the next ten years, because there are some things we just don't know."

Probably the worst comment that Bolden could have made. It lacks any kind of boldness or conviction of any kind.

This comment is so typical of certain elements of the Baby Boomer generation vs those that came of age during WW2.

He might as well said that NASA was too frightened to go beyond LEO or that getting even back to moon was far too hard and difficult for us now so we are not going to bother with it.

In 1961, we did not know lots of things about the moon, but we went there anyway.

Just throw in the towel now and get the whining over with.

@esmithatty

I sincerely hope you never are on a Mars mission design team. Your kind of blind, "can do" arrogance would very likely kill the crew. It is the kind of thinking that killed the Challenger and Columbia crews.

Reality is probably somewhere in between both of your viewpoints. Just as Mr Bolden's comments seem pragmatic: halfway between timidity and the cold, hard truth.

But incidentally; I wish we were ALL more on the same page these days, as many folk interested in space seem to be in conflict. Most unfortunate in this fragile time for U.S. space ventures.

ISSvet:

Striving for progress in space exploration (actually exploring) is not cutting back on safety or prudent spacecraft design.

If we don't fund NASA or set an aggressive plan for beo exporation then we are going to forever remain there.

By your forum name, you are tied to the ISS which is a magnificent destination place in and of itself. I would love to someday go up there and visit a space station maybe even a Bigelow Hotel.

However, going up to the space station is not space exploration in the sense that landing on the Moon or Phobos or an asteroid would be. It is a stepping stone to going there.

(It is understood that ISS is not designed as a astronaut waystation or something of the sort. It is a laboratory.)

In the times of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, the attitude was 'we can do it' now it is more of a "we might do it if people care, but we won't do anything to inspire them to care"

I remember watching grey images of men on the moon when I was 4 years old, that better not be the only time that I see such images.

Remember, many of the tasks that the Mars rovers have done over the past few years could be done in few days with boots on the ground.
