I can confirm that Bolden has been difficult (no, impossible) to reach. I have been trying to get an interview with him for a review of his first year-plus on the job for several weeks now, to no avail.

I saw this happening immediately after the Senate compromise was reached and Lori Garver took credit for seeing the Obama "vision" through. With human space exploration apparently preserved, Charlie is seen by the Obama people as either unsuccessful at leading the change to the new vision, or as a rogue Administrator. He took the bullets for his boss.... He has earned the right to lie low to recuperate, or prepare for a graceful exit.

Bolden made a political blunder and is taking a break from politicking. That makes sense all on its own. There need not be more story than that.

It just goes to show you about DC & NASA politics; one day you're a hero and the next day you're a bum. Poor Charles, in his eagerness to please Obama, he severely damaged his credibility.

Using the Space program to reach out to Muslims was never going to work anyway.

You can't have a serious discussion with Muslims on propulsion systems without one of the extemists jumping in with that whole "Heathen pig" argument. I tried it a thousand times.

Stealth visit? Do you read our site? We certainly read yours. but you say you just found out Aug. 6 that Bolden was at Goddard?
