BP oil well declared to be no longer a threat to gulf, LA Times
"The latest step in the undersea drama involved removing the old blowout preventer -- which had failed to stop the gusher. ... Engineers cleaned out and hoisted the 50-foot, 300-ton blowout preventer to the surface and loaded it on a large vessel Saturday night, Allen said in a statement. Under the supervision of federal investigators including the FBI, the device will be hauled to a NASA facility in New Orleans for storage."
NASA should bring the public along for a front row seat as an example of the practical value obtained from space activities. A mighty important lesson.

And out of what HSF budget will this exercise come? Apparently we have yet another goverment agency (MMS) that can't do its job so we'll just head over to NASA to get the job done. I don't recall that this is a requirement of the original nor amended NASA charter.
Before the era of big government, the insurance companies hired investigators (engineers, scientists, et. al.) to investigate and the court system handled the litigation. Which, by the way, is the way it's supposed to work under the Constitution.
More wasted tax money.
The Coast Guard is now home ported out of Maf since hurricane Katrina.I don't think Lockheed Martin or Jacobs Tech (MAF tenant's)are going to involved at all.
In the past Maf has been used to store government seized autos, boats. They even conducted operations from the docks at MAF that were classified such a government agency taking control of the docks and turning out the lights and cameras, and not allowing any MAF personnel including security in the area.

It's a Coast Guard activity!
The press caught the NASA reference and ran with it. The MAF is a multi-tenant facility. After Katrina, the Coast Guard re-directed a lot of resources to NO and built BSU New Orleans, the largest CG facility in the area, adjacent to the dock on MAF. That's where the BOP is going. IF, and that's an IF, they use equipment and personnel from Jacobs, NASA, LM, or whoever, they will pay the published rates for that service.

Thanks for the clarification BUT whether it is NASA or the Coast Guard, I don't see how that changes my point about it being handled by insurance and the courts. Still it will be tax money wasted.
And before anyone gets on the "more regulation bandwagon", there were plenty of regulations in place before the "accident" and we now find out that another government agency (in this case the MMS) was inept at carrying out its charter. No government agency (with thousands of employees) has ever been held accountable for failure and more government will not fix this.

Michoud has a Coast Guard station sharing the facility now, taking advantage of the dock facility there. I haven't heard anything about NASA/LM/Jacobs involvement in this project, just Coasties. There are X-ray and other NDE systems available there that they may end up calling on, but it looked more like most of this investigation would be at the physical level.
