"STRETCHED" NODE 3

  • This activity is a result of the deferral/ deletion of the Hab module from the Program
  • Desire is to retain many of the Hab functions within the ISS
    - Galley, wardroom, treadmill, refrigerator/ freezers
  • "Stretched" Node 3 option assessed by Program
    - Suggested by Alenia in past
    - Stretches Node 3 to accommodate 16 racks vs. baseline of 8 racks (Preferred option)

    FUNCTIONALITY TRANSFER

  • Hab functions transferred to Node 3
  • CHeCs (2 ea.)
  • Galley/ Trash Compactor
  • Refrigerator/ Freezer (2 ea.)
  • Wardroom -in radial port area (i. e. no longer rack- based)
  • TVIS (Treadmill) - Option to move to another module, but would lose ISPR location
  • 1 ZSR (Zero- g Storage Rack) - could be used for CheCs, Galley, stowage
  • Lab functions transferred to Node 3
  • FCWR (Fuel Cell Water Rack)
  • Hab functions transferred to Node 2
  • Crew Quarters (4 ea.)

    SUMMARY

  • If Hab deleted, extended Node 3 is best option considered
  • Does not replace Hab, but approximates functionality
  • Known issues need to be resolved
  • Need Alenia/ ASI input
  • Need Program Direction ASAP to minimize Node 3
    - Critical date is Sep. 2001 -- Alenia welds second endcone to structure

    OTHER OPTIONS

  • 12 rack Node 3
    - Decreases mass but loses some functionality
  • Send element structure to Alenia for outfitting/ integration
  • Manufacture copy of Node structure
  • Use modified MPLM structure
