NASA Watch note: the following was sent out across NASA on/around 31 May 2000 by the Graphics Coordinator at NASA HQ
From: Bertram Ulrich (bulrich@hq.nasa.gov) Hey Folks: I just wanted to update you on some issues so that we can get in sync on logo usage. I received a good response from those of you interested in these updates and so I will start sending them out monthly. 1) I received a question about three dimensional Meatballs. According to graphics standards, 3D Meatballs can be used on the Net but not on printed matter like posters and brochures. The 3-D version on www.nasa.gov has been approved and can be used for web design purposes only (and only on NASA sites). 2) Regarding Center logos, program logos and project logos on web pages, web pages deal with Agency-wide issues and are also very important in getting info out to the public. The web is also not considered Center specific. Therefore, webpages should have the Meatball on them and not a Center logo, program logo or project logo. Center Logos were never officially recognized and, in fact, the upper echelons of NASA wanted to get rid of Center Logos, program logos and project logos entirely. I know that this is a tough one to swallow but we have to stick to the new policy. 3) Program and project decals are yet another issue. For internal handouts, program and project decals are fine. However, for large scale trade shows and the like, a Meatball decal should be passed out. There is no need to worry about large numbers of already existing program or project decals. Simply use them up before switching to Meatball decals. 4) Regarding the electronic letterhead issue, we have been tasked to compare our letterhead policy with those of other Agencies. I'll keep you posted. 5) I received a question on whether mail merges would be affected by electronic letterhead (in case we were to go electronic). Apparently, they will not be affected. 6) We had one meeting already about updating the standards website. We may also put these updates directly on the web. But for now, I'll be e-mailing you. Take care and thanks for your input, patience, and sanity.
Sincerely,
